Homer R. Smail 93, of Vandergrift, died Wednesday May 9, 2018 in the Butler Memorial Hospital. Born June 3, 1924 in Vandergrift he is the son of the late David Cupps and Elizabeth Anna McGregor Smail. A veteran of the US Army having served during WWII, he had been employed by Wean United Engineering and Foundry in Vandergrift as a furnace tender prior to retiring in 1985 after 43 years of employment. Homer was a member of the First United Methodist church in Vandergrift where he was an 80 year member, a Sunday School teacher and a lay minister. He had entered into the cub scouts as a cub leader advancing to Boy Scout master and eventually commissioner. Homer earned the order of the arrow and the silver beaver metal, Homer was a member of the American Legion in Vandergrift serving as commander and then chaplain he had also been a member of the Odd Fellows in Vandergrift. Survivors include Robert H. and Rebecca J. Kane of Apollo, Sharon R. And Roger Cassidy of Newton Falls, Ohio. David L. and Rebecca Smail of Conneaut Lake. Five great nephews and eight great great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law David H. And Helen Smail, a sister and brother-in-law Winifred E. and Wilbert E. Kane. Family and friends will be received Monday from 1 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM in the Dunmire-Kerr and Rowe funeral home,Inc. 244 Franklin Ave., Vandegrift. Additional viewing will be held Tuesday from 10 AM till time of service at 11 AM in the First United Methodist Church in Vandergrift with his Pastor Sara Wrona officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Park lower Burrell.
