Bernard Stephen Smith 94, of Vandergrift, died Tuesday, July 17, 2018 in Forbes Regional Hospital, Monroeville. Born February 13, 1924 in Everson he is the son of the late Stephen and Lottie Stachick Smith, a veteran of WWII having served in the US Army in the 31st -32nd Signal Service Company a division of the Ghost Army which was a secret tactical deception unit that played a key role in the defeat of the Nazi Germany. He had been employed by Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation as a crane man for 40 years before retiring in 1986. A 1943 graduate of Vandergrift High School he had attended North Georgia College while in the military. A life member of the Spring Church Sportsman Club, he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time with his children and grandchildren and in his later years he spent time playing scratch off lottery tickets. Survivors include his daughter Susan (Robert) Hicks of Apollo, His son Robert Smith (Terry Taylor) of Monroeville. Four grandchildren Azure (Robert) Frioni, Leah Smith, Kelly (Eric) Band and Matthew (Julie) Hicks. Four great grandchildren Angelina Frioni, James Frioni, Henry Band and Madison Hicks, his sister Dorothy Bidwell of California., a longtime friend and companion Regina Anguilli of North Carolina formerly of Vandergrift along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Margaret (Monnie) Miller Smith in 1987, his son John Smith., a great granddaughter Isla Jade Hicks., four sisters Irene Yascak, Frances Adamik, Eleanor Weber and Theresa Pomykala. Family and friends will be received Friday from 4-7 pm in the Dunmire-Kerr & Rowe Funeral Home, Inc. 244 Franklin Avenue, Vandergrift where funeral services will be held Saturday at 10am with Pastor Brian Westgate officiating, Interment will be in the Poke Run Cemetery, Washington Township. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Allegheny Health Network Palliative and Hospice Care, 4818 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pa 15224.
